Brianna Hildebrand experienced something of a miracle early in her career. Her first big gig was opposite Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin in 2016’s anti-superhero blockbuster Deadpool and Deadpool 2. “I was so confused,” she admits. “I expected to spend years trying to do anything and it happened so quickly for me. It was almost like, ‘It’s not even right. Do I even deserve that?’” Before Deadpool, she had only ever filmed a “super low-budget” short and a web series. “So, getting on the set and seeing operations happening, big apparatuses moving in the sky was a really big learning curve,” she says. She reprised her role as Negasonic Teenage Warhead in the 2018 sequel, and shortly after booked Netflix’s upcoming Trinkets, where she plays one of three high school girls who meet in a Shoplifter’s Anonymous group. Her character Elodie is “super uncomfortable in her skin,” she says, “and interested in women.” But the series is far from a coming out story. “[Her identity] is a side note, which is one thing that I really loved about the project. It’s about the girls being friends and just fucking around and being fun…and then she just happens to be gay.”

In the months since Deadpool 2 has opened, star Brianna Hildebrand has been taking in the responses to her work and plotting her next move.

The actor reprised her role as X-Men trainee Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who in the sequel became the first big-budget superhero movie character in an LGBTQ relationship. The film introduced Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna) as her girlfriend, a move that earned the film praise from GLAAD and originated as an idea from star Ryan Reynolds.

“I’ve had so many positive responses,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It was Ryan’s idea. I had already done a lot of work with It Gets Better, so I think maybe he had seen some of that. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

This week, news broke that Hildebrand will star in Netflix’s Trinkets, based on the YA novel from Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith about three teenage girls who come together at a Shoplifter’s Anonymous meeting. After the success of Deadpool in 2016, more opportunities began coming her way, such as Fox’s canceled The Exorcist series, which she was filming during Deadpool 2.

“I used to read a lot of books, but now I read scripts,” she says. “For the most part, recently I’ve been really into strong female characters. This particular project has a lot of strong female leads.”

She stars in the series as Elodie, described as a grieving misfit, and appears opposite Kiana Madeira (Moe) and Quintessa Swindell (Tabitha).

“I was being considered for a couple of parts, but I chose Elodie because she’s just so different to anyone I’ve ever played,” she says of being cast in Trinkets, which began filming this week. “She’s really meek and socially awkward and she’s not very comfortable in her own skin … I’m cast a lot as the moody teen, so I thought it would be cool to do something different.”

The future of Deadpool is currently up in the air in light of the pending Fox/Disney merger, though a teamup X-Force movie with Drew Goddard is in the works. There’s also an untitled Deadpool film hitting on Christmas day, which is believed to be a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2. During her time in the Deadpdool universe, Hildebrand has gotten used to keeping secrets about the future.

“Fear Is definitely a factor. ‘I don’t want to be fired,’ ” she says with a laugh. “I’ve been going to so many conventions that I’ve had good practice.”
